Timber Harvest

The Ducktrap Wildlife Preserve will begin a timber harvest mid July that will last into the fall.

The primary objective of this project is to address climate change, as a healthy and ample forest will help offset greenhouse gas emissions. Over time the density of our forest has increased, resulting in more competition for a limited amount of nutrition. Using a “crop tree release” system, we will thin specified areas of the forest to promote the growth of healthy species that are better at sequestering carbon. Such valuable species have been identified as red oak, white pine, hemlock, yellow birch and sugar maple.

The most beneficial areas for the harvest have been identified and the marking process is currently taking place. The harvesting will begin mid September. The following link identifies the area of our property where the harvesting will be conducted:  DWP Timber Harvest Location. The staging area for the machinery will be adjacent to 10th avenue and the property will be accessed via North Cobbtown Road in Lincolnville. For safety purposes, we are asking that the public avoid accessing these areas throughout the duration of the project.

We are pleased to be partnering with ForTree, Inc., Mid- Maine Forestry and CTL Land Management Services, Inc. We are incredibly thankful for their experience, guidance and their shared commitment to this project.
